CDI / NICEC At the Cutting Edge webinar
The purpose of this Cutting Edge event is to bridge the gap between career theory, practice, and policy.
Career practitioners can strengthen their work and impact by consciously selecting and using career theory to inform their evidence-based practice, as well as advocating for careers work. In this session there is an opportunity to reflect on how practitioners make conscious choices about how and when to embed career theory in their practice. We will also explore new and emerging career theories as well as applying familiar career theories to new contexts.

13:40 - 14:00 How and why practitioners use theories in practice - Julia Yates
Julia has recently been involved in a study that has explored the ways that career practitioners use theories in practice. In this session she will share some of the lessons she has learnt about how practitioners apply theories to their work, and what value they feel their theoretically driven practice adds to their work and to their clients.
14:00 - 14:15 ‘Street level bureaucrats’; the enactment of career-related theory to reshape policy – Michelle Stewart
Michelle is a policy adviser to the CDI and takes an active interest in the development and impact of public policy on career guidance provision in the UK. In this session Michelle will adopt a case-study approach to examine the relationship between public policy and the provision of career guidance and explore how career practitioners’ understanding of career theory gives them the capacity to reshape policy through the practice decisions they make.
14:15 - 14:40 A fresh look at career theories - Julia Yates
In this session Julia will talk about some of the more recent developments in career theories and identify some current trends. She will then introduce some specific career development theories that may be new to participants, and which can shed some light on our clients’ situations and experiences and offer some practical guidance.
14:40 - 15:00 Applying career theory to designing career interventions - Rosemary McLean
In Rosemary’s consultancy work in organisations, she brings career theory to life to inform and shape the design of impactful career solutions, including workshops, blended learning career resources and equipping managers and inhouse career coaches to provide career development support. She’ll share some examples of how she does this in practice, and benefits this brings.

15:15 - 16:15 Theory in Practice – Janet Sheath
We will continue the thread of linking career theories to practice by creating a reflective space for the last hour of the afternoon. You will be able to apply the theories you have engaged with during the workshop to your client work or to your own career. You will work with colleagues to deepen your understanding of the role of theory in your client work as part of your CPD and reflective practice.
16:15 - 16:30 Panel Discussion. – Rosemary McLean
Rosemary is a registered Career Practitioner and Chartered Occupational Psychologist with many years’ experience in the careers field. She now enables organisations to develop and shape career development strategy to support business goals and align individual aspirations and passions with internal opportunities. Her consultancy work with the Career Innovation Company is evidence based applying systemic approaches to career development in organisations including the development of career frameworks. She also designs and delivers career development workshops and has developed a next generation on-line career development course ‘Be Bold in your Career’ to scale up meaningful careers support to people in the workplace. Rosemary has worked as a careers coach in both the career transition and careers guidance fields and is a CDI Legacy Fellow and mentor as well as a NICEC Fellow.
Janet is Programme Director for the Birkbeck, University of London Career Coaching Masters and Certificate programmes. She works across the practitioner / academic boundary, connecting career research and theory into the world of career coaching. Janet runs her own Career Consultancy working with organisations to manage and develop careers. She also coaches individuals in career transition. Janet consults with career agencies, trains and supervises experienced career coaches in the UK and Ireland and Germany and is a fellow of the National Institute of Career Education and Counselling.
Michelle is an independent careers consultant, editor of the NICEC Journal and associate lecturer at Canterbury Christ Church University where she teaches on the MA/PG Dip Career Guidance (with QCD). Michelle has experience of careers work in education and has been actively involved in the development and provision of the Career Development Professional Higher Apprenticeship. Michelle has a strong interest in career-related theory and its relationship to career and employment support services public policy.
Julia is the programme director for the MSc in Organisational Psychology at City, University of London where she teaches career development and coaching. Before moving over to a career in academia, Julia spent 15 years working in the careers field, working in schools, colleges and universities and she continues to work freelance as a career coach. Julia is passionate about making stronger links between research and practice and writes and speaks widely about the practical application of career theories in practice.
